A Dr Seuss Bedroom

seuss

One of the highlights of my daughter’s room is the large mural that stretches over her entire wall. It’s a forest and a stream, and in the mural I hid characters from Dr Seuss’s The Lorax. I created it when she was one, so she didn’t have much say in the matter at the time, but she likes it now.

If you have a child who loves Dr Seuss characters, you can create a Seuss-themed room quite easily.Choose a story as the base of your theme. This will help you create a consistent look and add certain characters to the room.

Look at the colors used in the story. Dr Seuss books tend to be quite colourful, which makes them fun for a child’s bedroom. Choose three or four of the main colors in the story and use them to inspire your decorating. For example, for The Cat in the Hat you might choose black, white, red and blue as the basis of your decorating scheme. You can then decorate in that theme by getting items like red and blue curtains or a red and white-striped bedspread. Stripes, checks, and patterns? But of course!

To add the Seussical notes, place Seuss art on the walls. You can purchase Dr Seuss wall decals, or if you are brave (or unwise, like I was) you can try drawing the characters freehand on the wall before you paint them.

On the walls, add quotes from Dr Seuss books. These are easy to print, then you can frame them and place them on the wall. You might also want to take the cover off an old Seuss book and frame it as art as well. Or how about a silhouette cut out of The Cat in the Hat? Decorate the bed with a few Dr Seuss stuffed animals as well. If you are really inspired, you can also decorate the room with artifacts from the particular book that inspires you. How about a bowl with a fish?

Have you created a theme room for a preschooler? What theme did you choose and how did you work it into the room?
