A Frugal Garden

frugal living saving money gardeningGardening is a great way to beautify the exterior of your home. Whether you are wanting to create an entire garden, a simple flower bed, or want strategically placed flowers throughout your yard, it doesn’t have to break the bank!

Saving money in your garden, doesn’t have to mean an ugly or limited flower bed. Nor does it mean that you cannot enjoy your hobby.
It just means there are a few ways to go about cutting costs in your garden. I’m going to give you some tips on how.

Paint Your Tools

You know those great gardening tools? Typically they seem to come with green or brown handles. Have you noticed that? Well, how many times have you reached for a tool and could not find it. Get some fluorescent colored paints and paint the handles of your tools. They will be easier to find and one small tube of paint is less than $1.00! Sure beats having to replace a tool you cannot find!

Trade Clippings

Trade flower clippings with your neighbors or friends. Share the clippings and both of you will be expanding your garden for no money at all. Better yet, get a group of neighbors together and have a “clippings exchange party”. Have each neighbor bring a clipping for another neighbor, or one for each person at the party. Drink cold lemonade and cookies and talk about the beautiful flowers.

Seed Packet Sharing

In addition to trading your clippings you can also organize a seed packet swap. Share a seed with each neighbor from a different packet. If each person purchases a seed packet with a different flower represented you can share the seeds. It might also be nice to get together later and see how the flowers grew, and how each person organized their “garden”.

Water In The Morning

Watering your garden first thing in the morning is the best time. First, it has cooled off enough in the evening hours to make the water last a bit longer in the morning. The heat evaporates the water quickly, so watering while it’s still cool or less scorching is the best time. It helps to save money on the water by allowing you to use less, and in addition helps the flowers grow better.

Dollar Store Finds

Be sure and check out your local dollar store for great finds to decorate your garden, but in addition to decorations you can also find tools, and sometimes even seeds and plants. Check around to different stores to see what you can find.

Sticks and Stones

Use natural elements to decorate your garden. Paints rocks or leave them au natural. Sticks can be assembled to decorate your garden in various ways.

No matter how you decide to grow your garden, have fun with it. You don’t have to have a frugal garden, but having one has not only saved you money, but can often make you feel much better!
