A Glass of Water for Weight Loss?

My husband and I are both trying to lose weight. I am trying to lose a few inches of my baby belly and my husband is trying to lose the weight he gained from all those romantic dinners at Olive Garden during our first years together. Since I am nursing my 4-month-old, I’m a little limited when it comes to dieting, but my husband has radically changed his diet. In addition to eating a lot of lean protein, fish, and plenty of fruits and vegetables, he has increased his daily water intake. Can water really help you lose weight? It depends when you drink it.

A few months ago I saw a commercial on TV for a product called Full Bar. As I watched the commercial, I wondered if the secret to this diet was not the diet bar, but the full glass of water they instructed dieters to drink after consuming the diet bar. Drinking a full glass of water is bound to make you feel more full. Now, my husband likes to eat until he is uncomfortably full. I don’t understand it, since I hate that “just rolled out of the buffet” feeling, but if he is enjoying his meal and he is not 100% full, he can’t bear to leave any food on his plate. I suggested to him that he drink a full glass of water about 10-15 minutes before lunch and dinner. That way he still gets to eat until he is (too) full, but a third of what is sitting in his stomach is just water.

With minimal exercise, a healthy diet and this full glass of water technique, he has lost over 20 pounds in the last 10 weeks. He plans to increase the amount of time he spends lifting weights and exercising gradually until he is in good physical shape. In addition to helping him lose weight, drinking more water has made him feel better overall. It’s a win-win situation!
