A Little Off the Beaten Path…

I know it’s a little off the beaten path for this blog, but can I take a moment to share my personal experiences with you? Running a business from home is hard work. Much harder than I ever thought it would be. It probably seems, to some, that I stressed the importance of setting a schedule a little too much. Please, allow me to explain why.

Did you know that my 3 year old son seems to be the only person on the planet, or at least in my world right now who can comprehend the words “I’m working right now.” I cannot count on two hands the times in a day that I will tell someone that no, I cannot do whatever it is they are wanting me to do at that very second. I understand that you would like your laundry folded (I don’t allow my fiancé to fold laundry, he’s terrible at it!), but I am working. I know you would like to come over for coffee and just to chit chat, but believe it or not, I am working. No, I cannot watch your precious little angel for a while so you can go shopping, I am actually working.

My dear fiancé is probably the worst offender. I think he has become too accustomed to having a house wife and stay at home mom here. Last Friday, I finally let it all out. I did not yell, I did not lose my temper, I said this all very calmly, but firmly, in hopes that he would finally get the message.

“Honey, I do not know where your shoes, socks, wallet, keys, and sunglasses are. They are most likely exactly where YOU left them when you came in last night. I cannot get up and find them for you, I am working. I know you are quite engrossed in your History Channel program right now, but you will just have to pause it and get your own drink. That’s why we have DVR. While you are at it, would you be so kind as to get me a glass of water? I am busy working. You are an intelligent man. I have faith in you. I promise, if you just try, you will find your own wallet, keys, shoes, and socks. You will be able to get your own drink. You will be able to dress yourself. I promise, you can do it. Now would you please let me have just an hour of uninterrupted time so that I may work? I don’t call you at work to ask where my lipstick is, and it would really help me out if you could afford me the same courtesy, because even though I am at home, I am working.”
