A New Trend: Couples Showers

A baby showers for couples is a fast growing new trend. These showers differ from the typical baby shower in that men are invited as well as women. When we were invited to our first couples shower, my husband said, “Since when do men go to baby showers?” He was very unsure about the idea, but ended up having a good time.

When planning a couples shower, be sure to include the information on the invitation. Many people still assume that showers are for women only. You’ll need to specify that the men are invited too on the invitation. Choose invitations that are less feminine when planning a co-ed by shower, rather than frilly invitations. Address the envelopes to the couple.

If you are planning a shower to include men, be sure to invite several male guests. This will make the event more comfortable for the male guests as well as the father to be. Very few men would feel comfortable at a baby shower with only one or two other men present. They will feel more comfortable with several male friends to hang out with.

When planning the menu, include foods that men enjoy. You probably won’t want to do finger sandwiches and tea, if men will be attending the shower. Think Super Bowl Party when planning the menu. Include munchies that men enjoy, such as hot wings and nachos. A barbecue is a great choice for a couples shower. A few of the men can tend the grill.

The typical shower games are usually not part of a couple’s shower. Choose games that both men and women will like to play. You can play games in a few different ways. Have each couple be a team for the games or split the teams into mommies and daddies and compete against each other. Some people choose to skip games at a couples shower. This is fine, since these showers tend to be more like a party than a traditional shower.

Sometimes men like to feel useful, and they certainly can be at a couples shower. Let the men work on putting the baby gear together as the mother to be opens the gifts. The new father will probably really appreciate the help and there won’t be a huge pile of baby gear that needs to be assembled after the shower has ended.
