A New Twist on an Old Favorite

I don’t think there is anyone in the world that does not love a grilled cheese sandwich. Most of us begin eating them as a child and still love them as adults. But, you have to admit, there is not much there. Bread, butter, cheese…that is all there is to it. Or is it? Did you ever think about modifying the traditional grilled cheese sandwich? If you looked around, there are plenty of recipes that do just that!

Instead of just cheddar, consider adding other types of cheese. If you combine cheddar, muenster, and provolone, you have great grilled cheese sandwich! I also found a recipe for a spicy grilled cheese – just add a little jalapeno, a sliced Roma tomato, and chopped onions.

My husband loves when I make grilled cheese sandwiches and add a layer of bacon. Just cook the bacon beforehand and add it to one side of the grilled cheese before you make it a sandwich. Trust me – it is delicious!

Then there is the Greek Grilled Cheese sandwich. This sandwich is made the same way as the traditional grilled cheese, but in addition to cheddar cheese, a layer of feta cheese, chopped red onion, and sliced tomato is added.

There is a “glorified grilled cheese” sandwich. For this one, whisk an egg with a little salt and pepper. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a skillet. Spread mayonnaise and mustard on one side of the sandwich bread. One the other side, layer thinly sliced ham and Swiss cheese. Close the sandwich and carefully dip it into the egg. Place it on the grill and cook until brown.

The possibilities are almost endless! I found one recipe that added a sprinkle of brown sugar to the slices of cheese to make it a sweet grilled cheese sandwich. There was also a grilled cheese and peanut butter sandwich. I don’t know if I will try either of those, but you might like to!
