A Room of Your Own

Do you have your own room? I am lucky enough to have one. It’s my home office, and it’s also just my room. By my room I mean that I can decorate it the way that I want, which is a luxury.

It all started with the chair. I was searching Craigslist one evening, looking for building supplies for my daughter’s playhouse. Instead, in the free section of Craigslist I found a chair that just called to me. Loudly. It was pale green with wooden arms and legs and looked like it would fit perfectly into my office. Of course, when I emailed the person it was spoken for already, but when the first person didn’t show up, the chair became mine. Everyone commented that it looked like a 1950s office chair, and maybe it is. It’s plush and it’s green and it’s my chair. It is there for the sole purpose of relaxation.

Next was the bookshelf. I inherited a quantity of furniture from my grandfather, and in my epic getting-rid-of-things after my vacation in June, I moved the bookshelf upstairs. Funnily enough, it suited the chair just fine. I suspect that they are even from the same era.

Since my study now seemed to be adopting a 1950s theme, I decided to take it a step further. I searched Ebay for a retro telephone. You know, one of those phones with a real ring, the one that everyone tries to emulate on their cell phones these days? One of those phones with a rotary dial that takes forever, it seems? That’s my phone. And yes, I love it too.

I didn’t expect to have a 1950s theme study, that’s for sure. But I’m having fun with it, and it’s a cheap thrill, and best of all, it’s my own space. What would you do with a room of your own?
