A Scrape of the Head

Our son is our pride and joy. A little bundle. We still imagine him as our little guy. We still think of him as really small. We still believe, somehow, that he’ll stay this way forever. We mistakenly believe that he hasn’t changed all that much. Being with him everyday has made me slow to realize the changes he’s gone through in a short period of time. While I try to pay close attention to the changes and report them through this blog I often miss some of the most basic things. Recently my wife and I were reviewing photos of our little guy: boy was he little a year ago.

“They grow up so fast.” That’s the tried and true statement that you just don’t get until you’re a parent. My wife and I have yet to comprehend the full meaning (I imagine that takes place when the kids graduate from high school, leave for college, take a job in another country, marry, have their own kids, etc…) but we’re experiencing the tiniest bit of it with our son who is certainly growing very quickly. My wife takes issue with the fact that he no longer fits snugly on her lap. He now sprawls all over her and still spills off. He is growing.

Then thing that recently shocked me was when he darted under my desk at breakneck speed, as usual, only to scrape the top of his head (he didn’t get hurt or anything) on the underside of the desk. He’s become taller. He was a little scared of course; the ceiling had never been that low. Now, when he’s aware of it, he ducks. It’s very funny to watch him duck because I think of him as small, but he isn’t. He’s growing bigger every day. They do, in fact, grow up fast.
