A Trip to the Family History Library

If you are interested in completing a trip to complete research for your genealogy one of the best places to go is the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. This library is run by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but it is open to the public and there is no charge for accessing the materials that you find there.

The library is open on Mondays from 8:00 A.M.-5:00 P.M. and Tuesdays through Saturdays from 8:00 A.M.-9:00 P.M. The library is closed on Sundays. The library does close for holidays, so you should check to be sure that they are open. If you are traveling to go the library, there are several hotels within walking distance of the library. Additionally there is public parking, but you will have to pay for it.

To make the most of your trip you should have already completed some of your research. A trip the Family History Library would be the most useful once you have completed a significant portion of your work, and when you need access to a wide variety of sources. You can view microfilm, and microfiche at the library, as well as access books about genealogy.

It would be beneficial to visit a Family History Center before you go on your trip. At a center you can access the catalogue for the library and make sure that the information you need is accessible. If the records say vault on them you will need to order the materials at least three days before you arrive so that the library workers can retrieve the records for your use.

There is an orientation available when you arrive. If you have a group going you can request an orientation for the group in advance. Normal library etiquette rules apply while you are at the library. There are over two hundred computers for patrons to use as well as over five hundred microfilm readers. This means that you should be able to do the research you need to do. The information at the library focuses on records before the 1930s.
