A-Z Summer Activites for Homeschoolers pt 1(A-G)

Kari has written about educational and fun summer activities in a recent blog. I highly recommend you try some of them over the summer. I believe they apply to homeschoolers as well as traditionally schooled children.

I want to add to the list some fun and educational activities that homeschoolers will want to consider for while taking a break from your normal homeschool activities.

A= astronomy. Take a midnight field trip to a planetarium to view the stars. On clear nights, you may even be able to see planets. I remember seeing Mars a couple years ago.

B= books. Visit your local bookstore or Library to stock up on lots of good books for summer reading. I spent $75.00 the other day buying Nancy Drew books and some classics for my son at $3.00 a book.

C= critical thinking. Purchase a workbook or two from criticalthinking.com. It will give your child a different approach for understanding a touch subject.

D= Dogs. If you children beg to watch TV, insist they watch animal planet. They will learn about cats, horses, and many other animals too.

E= Electricity. Give an impromptu lesson on electricity conservation and reward the kids for keeping lights turned off when not in use. This is especially useful when air conditioners are causing elevated electric bills.

F= Field trips. Take advantage of the many activities your local city provides over the summer. There is the zoo, public parks, discover landmarks, or participate in book readings at the library.

G= geometry. Cut out shapes with the children and hang them from the ceiling in the form of mobiles. Depending upon the age of the child, write the name of the shape, or formulas. You will be amazed by how much the children will learn just creating the shapes and looking at the mobiles will reinforce what they have learned.
