Add a Little Nature to Brighten Your Home and Your Mood

When your home is dark and gloomy then chances are that your mood is the same way. Our homes are reflections of ourselves, and then often can determine just how we feel. That is why it is so important to add things to our home that can brighten it up and add to a wonderful sense of comfort and joy.

One of the things that can really brighten a home is a commitment to going back to nature. This can be done simply. Treat yourself to some beautiful brightly colored flowers. There has been some research showing that flowers can boost your mood and keep it elevated for days. Even a bouquet of wildflowers that you pick yourself may do the trick.

Having an outdoor oasis in your home is another great way to boost your mood as well as the feel of your home. Research shows that just 15 minutes in a green backyard can make your calm and positive. Even the smallest of places can have an oasis, such as a fire-escape full of flowers and plants (check if this is legal in your area), a window box or even a corner of the room filled with potted plants. That green automatically lowers blood pressure, muscle tension and heart rate.

Another little bit of nature that does all of the above is the humble fish. Why not add a colorful fish tank or even just a fish bowl to your home. Watching the fish swim lazily around has a calming effect. Ever notice that many dentist offices have fish tanks? Pet fish are proven to relieve anxiety.

Finally, you can brighten your home with just the sounds and smells of nature. Open the windows on a nice spring day to help your home reconnect after your winter hibernation. There is almost nothing better than waking up to the gentle trill of birdsong.
