Thanks to embellishments, such as 3D stickers, die cuts and flocking powder, scrappers can turn ordinary layouts into extraordinary works of art filled with different textures and layers.
These visual enhancements make a page design more appealing. However, the unique embellishments can also add up quick, making it hard for penny-pinching scrappers to maintain the multi-faceted look for an entire memory book.
Fortunately, there are ways you can add texture and visual appeal to scrapbook pages without going broke. One of my favorite methods is to incorporate vellum to the layout. The specialty paper is amazingly versatile and doesn’t require taking out a loan to purchase.
What’s more, vellum is very easy to use. One of my favorite ways to spice up a scrapbook page is to mat photos with vellum. You can also layer plain vellum over patterned paper to soften the look. I’ve used my computer to print clip art onto vellum scrapbook paper, though I wouldn’t recommend it if you don’t have a high-quality printer or you are in a rush to complete a page design. Ink takes longer than normal to dry on vellum. Meaning you have to plan ahead if you are creating a layout which includes stamping or printing on vellum.
If you don’t want to deal with the ink issue, then simply use vellum to create a page pocket. Colorful mementos look fantastic stored in transparent vellum pockets. Plus, making your own page pocket is cheaper than purchasing one and you can further enhance it by coloring the vellum with chalk. Depending on how successful you are coloring the vellum, you could also cut up the paper and craft a stained glass embellishment to use on your layout.
Just remember that if you buy vellum in bulk to save a few dollars, it’s a good idea to have a safe storage place to keep it. Vellum is very delicate. Smudges, smears, oil and creases show up very easily on vellum, so you want to limit the amount of time you handle the specialty paper prior to placing it on your layout.
