Advantages of Being a Mid-life Mom

Women who have babies later in life actually have some advantages over their younger counterparts. Here are just a few of them.

1.Financially secure– Many women delay having babies until later in life because of their career track. As a result when they become mothers they are often more financially secure than younger women who might be just starting out in their careers. With financial security comes better health care and a safe and healthy pregnancy. Older mothers may also be able to retire early or be fortunate to have a position which allows flexible work arrangements giving them time to nurture their offsprings.

2.Career and educational goals have usually been met- Older moms have also generally met their career and educational goals and won’t have to make decisions such as quitting college or work to care for a child.

3.More than likely to be in a stable marriage/ relationship– Although many women choose to travel down the road of parenthood alone, most late life moms are in either a stable marriage or long term relationship. And we all know the impact of a stable home life on the development of a young child.

4.Older moms may be more confident in their childrearing abilities– Yes, some older mothers, especially those with limited exposure to young children may question their ability to successfully care for a child especially a newborn, many more older moms take an “I can do this attitude” and become super moms of childrearing.

5. Older moms tend to think of parenting as an adventure— We enjoy going to Sesame Street Live, the Wiggles and Dora the Explorer and we have as much fun if not more than our kids. Especially if we have one child and don’t plan on having more, we seem to delight in every moment of our child’s existence.

6. We have more life experiences- Since we’ve lived longer we naturally have more life experiences and these experiences help us parent successfully in the long run.

Not to take anything away from younger mothers, there are certainly excellent mothers in every age bracket. But older moms, as the young folk say, “got it going on!“ So instead of sometimes focusing on the negative aspects of being an older mom, stop and take a minute to consider this greatest of gift that has been given to you and concentrate more on the good things about being a older mom.
