Alaska Genealogy Resources

Alaska flag The state motto of Alaska is “North to the Future”. Genealogists, however, find the past to be more interesting than the future. Do you have ancestors who lived in Alaska? If so, then this blog will be very useful for you. It has links to genealogy resources that are specific to Alaska.

Cyndi’s List is an amazing resource for genealogists, no matter what state their ancestors came from. They have conveniently posted all of the links to resources that relate to Alaska into one place. You can find links to records to “birth, marriage, death”, “cemeteries and funeral homes”, “Census”, “military” and much more.

Gastineau Genealogical Society is located in Juneau, Alaska. You can see a list of current, ongoing, and completed projects that the society has involvement in. Scroll down, and you will see a list of genealogy resources for people who want to get started in Family History Research.

FamilySearch has a FamilySearch Wiki page about Alaska Vital Records. There are links that will connect you to the Alaska State Archives, the Tombstone Transcription Project for Alaskan Cemeteries, the Anchorage Master Burial List, and much more.

Ancestry.com has a list of resources for Alaska genealogy that are available to people who have an Ancestry.com membership. There are also a few resources that are being offered for free (at least for now). You can find links to the Alaska Census (1870 – 1907), the Alaska Find a Grave Index for 1867 – 2011, and a lot more.

Internment.net has cemetery records online. There are four counties in Alaska that have links to information from cemeteries that are located within that county in Alaska. Scroll down, and you will find a few more resources for Alaska vital records.

RootsWeb is another excellent resource for genealogists who are seeking resources that will help them learn more about their ancestors who lived in Alaska. There is a search engine in this page. Or, you can start by clicking on any of the links collected by RootsWeb.

GeneaLinks has a link to the Yukon and Alaska Genealogy Center, to two Alaskan cemeteries, and a link to Alaska churches. It has a link to an Alaska surname queries, and a link to the “Blacks in Alaska History Project”.

The Anchorage Genealogical Society has its own website. Unfortunately, the time I was writing this blog coincided with the time they do their site maintenance. I’m sure there are a wealth of resources and information available on the website when it is accessible.
