There are so many fun items that you can alter, and one of the latest crazes seems to be lunch boxes and small tin boxes. This adorable altered lunch box was Contributed by Tina Husong
It’s really very easy to alter a lunch box or tin box and there are so many things you can use them for.
To alter a lunch box you will need:
- A small lunch box or lunch pail
- Themed papers
- Embellishments
- Double Sided Tape or other adhesive
- Hot glue gun or other sturdy adhesive for embellishments
First, you will need to decide what you want to use your lunch box or pail for. One of my favorite ideas is a recipe box, but I’ve seen many other creative ideas such as an organizer for photos, scrapbook sketches, coupons, or just to contain small objects.

Once you have decided what type of box you are going to create you will need to figure out the papers and embellishments. Most people just choose a color palette that they are drawn to, and keep it simple. Others choose to follow the theme all the way through from papers to embellishments.

Now that you’ve gotten this far, it’s time to start altering! Measure your box so you know how long your paper needs to be to start covering. Then take your papers and begin to cover the outside of your box. You can do this in pieces, or cover the box entirely. I prefer doubled sided tape to adhere the papers to the box, but other adhesives work well too.
Now it’s time to begin embellishing the box. I use a lot of paper flowers and ribbons to decorate my boxes, and I’ve found that a hot glue gun works the best. Decorate your box however you would like, with any type of embellishment.
It’s important to use some chipboard letters or something else on the outside of the box to “label” the contents.
Another favorite way to finish off a box is to cut a bunch of different coordinating ribbons to the same size and tie around the handle on the box. It just adds a little flare at the end!
You now have an adorably decorated altered lunch pail.
