Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Chipmunk Adventure (1987)

adI used to watch Alvin and the Chipmunks when I was a little girl. With the release of the new film “Alvin and the Chipmunks,” a whole new generation is being introduced to the furry little singing rodents. My kids were thrilled when I brought home “The Chipmunk Adventure.” Although animated and not live action, like the new film, they enjoyed learning more about Alvin, Simon, and Theodore.

Dave is getting ready for a long trip to Europe for business. Alvin really wants to come along, but Dave tells him no. He’s hired Miss Miller, an eccentric elderly lady, to come in and take care of the boys, and he thinks everything is under control. Alvin, however, really wants that trip. While playing games at the arcade, he and Chipette Brittney go head to head in a game called “Around the World in Thirty Days.”

Wait . . . what was that? You had a question? Oh, what is a Chipette?

Well, a Chipette is a female chipmunk. In the animated version of the show, there are three girl chipmunks. Brittney is the girl version of Alvin, Jeanette is the female Simon, and Eleanor is Theodore’s counterpart. They also sing. I know, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me either.

Anyway, the game is called “Around the World in Thirty Days.” Alvin expresses his desire to go around the world, and is overheard by Claus and Claudia, a brother and sister who are in the gem export business. They need to transport their gems around the world without getting caught, and they decide to rope the Chipmunks and Chipettes into being the couriers. They tap into the children’s naturally competitive natures and provide them with hot air balloons, and send them on their way. We see them go to many exotic ports of call and have a whole lot of adventures before the final exciting conclusion, when the bad guys are caught and Alvin gets in trouble.

This was a fun film. We only got it the other day and my children have requested to see it five times. Rated G, it contains some mild peril but nothing to be concerned about.
