Amazon Bestsellers – April 2008

What are the best selling books in the nation right now? What’s everyone reading? What are they talking about at the water cooler? Let’s find out.

As of right this minute, the #1 best selling books on Amazon.com are:

1. “The Last Lecture” by Randy Pausch. Randy was a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon. Professors are often asked to give their hypothetical “last lecture,” to pretend they are dying or retiring and to decide what things they would find most important to say. When Randy was asked to fulfill this assignment, he didn’t have to pretend. He already was facing his death, having been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

2. “A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose” by Eckhart Tolle. This book shows how we need to transcend our ego-based existences and learn how to live without the anger that our egos can produce.

3. “The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment” by Eckhart Tolle. This book is the prequel to our #2 bestseller and talks about how living in the “now” is the key to greatest happiness.

4. “Just Who Will You Be?” by Maria Shriver. Based on an address she was asked to deliver right after her husband became governor of California, Maria talks about how our worth isn’t based on what we do, but who we are, and we need to discover that for ourselves.

5. “Escape” by Carolyn Jessop. Carolyn left a polygamous commune run by the FLDS Church and this book outlines how she left, what she endured beforehand, and the battles she is still facing with the Church and her husband.

6. “Breaking Dawn” by Stephenie Meyer. This is the fourth installment in the “Twilight” series and won’t even be released until August, but it’s already making its presence known on the Amazon sales chart.

7. “Three Cups of Tea” by Greg Mortensen. Mortensen attempted to climb the world’s highest mountain back in 1993. He was dangerously ill and was not able to complete the climb, and was taken in by the Pakistani village of Korphe. In thanks, he went back and served the people. This book is his story.

8. “Unaccustomed Earth” by Jhumpa Lahiri. The first fiction book to grace our list, we read about the struggles faced by expatriate Bengali parents and their children in America. This book contains eight short stories.

9. “The Shack” by William P. Young. This book is a novel, but it reads like a prayer. An ultimate man-meets-God book, it has been highly praised by readers and critics alike.

10. “Eat This, Not That” by David Zinczenko. What if you could save yourself from gaining thirty pounds just by making different food choices? This book will tell you all about it.

The bestsellers list on Amazon is in a constant state of flux, but by checking it once a month, we’ll be able to keep our fingers on the pulse of what the nation is reading.
