American Idol’s Underdog Kris Allen

Kris Allen snuck into the final thirteen of “American Idol.” I don’t remember seeing his original audition or much, if any, of him during the famed Hollywood week. When he was announced as one of the top thirteen, I think a lot of people went “Huh?” But, Allen has proved his worth by making it to tonight’s finale.

Call him the Little Singer that Could. Allen has outlasted everyone else except powerhouse Adam Lambert to make it to the finale. Allen and Lambert’s styles are quite different. Allen looks humble up on the stage no matter what he is doing, giving the occasional “ah, shucks” look to the camera while Lambert and his guyliner, while still humble, is always dramatic during his performances.

Their origins are quite different as well. Lambert is from metropolitan San Diego, the beautiful California city by the Pacific Ocean while Allen is from sleepy Conway, Arkansas, which is – well – in the middle of Arkansas.

Allen’s friends all think he can slay Goliath tonight. College friend JP Davenport was initially worried about Allen’s chances before last night’s show, but feels better now. With friends gathered together, she said, “after the performances, we were all pretty confident, and we weren’t as shocked as we were last week when he made it through.” She also told MTV that she thinks Allen will “pull it out.”

There are even weekly parties to watch Allen on “American Idol.” Sonja Keith organizes weekly “Kris Allen Watch Parties” in Conway. She said there is definitely a feeling of electricity in the small town of 50,000.

Many fans are conflicted between the two singers. One fan on MTV forums, TwigLA, said that although she would like Lambert to win, it would be Allen’s album she would be buying.

To find out who will win this season of “American Idol,” you will have to tune in to Fox tonight for the season finale.
