Antz (1998)

Gather every star in Hollywood and put their voices together in one film, and you’ve got “Antz.”

Woody Allen stars as Z, a neurotic and insecure ant who’s in therapy, trying to understand his place in the colony. He feels uncomfortable with the lack of individuality he’s been taught his entire life, and wonders if there isn’t more out there. While drinking aphid beer at the bar one night, an old-timer tells him of a wonderful place called “Insectopia,” where the bugs don’t have a boss and there’s food enough for everyone. A dream is planted in Z’s heart.

Meanwhile, Princess Bala (Sharon Stone) wants to leave the confines of her residence and see what life is like for the rest of the aunts. She goes to the bar and asks Z to dance, and he’s immediately smitten. What he doesn’t know is that Bala is engaged to marry General Mandible (Gene Hackman), a conniving ant who has a secret plan to take over the colony.

Z is anxious to see Bala again, but can’t get near her. The soldier ants are having a review before the royal family, so Z asks Weaver, his best friend (Sylvester Stallone) if they can trade places, just for the day. Weaver agrees, and Z goes marching off, hoping to see the princess, but not knowing that he’s actually going into battle.

It’s pretty brutal – the ants are marching against the termites. Z doesn’t know what to do, but is taken in by Barbatus, an old hand (Danny Glover). When Barbatus is killed, Z begins to wonder just what’s going on with the political system in the colony.

This movie had some great moments of comedy, which we really enjoyed. It also had some swearing and an innuendo, which surprised me in an animated movie. What you might want to do is watch it for yourself and decide if you’d like your children to see it. You can also decide if there are scenes or words you’d like to blip over (gotta love that remote control.)

Overall, I enjoyed the film, but I do wish I’d known beforehand about the language. This movie was rated PG.

Other celebrities appearing in this film are: Anne Bancroft, Dan Akroyd, Jane Curtain, Jennifer Lopez, John Mahoney, and Christopher Walken.
