Appreciation Exercises – Challenge Yourself

Do you ever feel like you and your spouse are doing the same things, day in and day out? Do your I Love Yous feel perfunctory? Do your conversations seem to echo the same words? Do you feel like your missing something vital from the pairing and you aren’t sure where it is?

Marriage can be very comfortable and there is nothing wrong with that. But marriage also offers you some great opportunities. One of the ways you can enhance your appreciation and admiration for each other is to challenge your spouse and yourself.

For example, have you always wanted to go back to school? Find a way to make that happen. Consider taking a class together. It can be a great way to recharge your mental batteries and challenge you both. Your classes don’t have to be academic – you can take art, photography or cooking classes together.

If classes don’t appeal, think about something you’ve always wanted to do and invite your spouse to join you in trying it out. Golf lessons, bowling or simply learning a new craft can recharge your creative skills and give you both something else to share.

For example, my husband always wanted to go back to school and I’ve always wanted to grow roses. Currently, he’s back at school and I’m doing everything I can to support it – including listening to his enthusiasm for his classes and what he is learning. There is a joy in him that is both reminiscent of our early years together and is altogether new at the same time. He says the same things about my gardening, he is as involved helping me to take care of the garden or heavy lifting if I need it.

Marriage affords you a mutual admiration society. Supporting each other and challenging yourselves to reach new and greater heights. It can energize you to reach out beyond personal stagnation and enhance your relationship at the same time.

What other things can you think of that you can do together or with the support of your spouse that would challenge and enhance you both?
