This week in our grocery store advertisement, like many other weeks, we have several things advertised at 10 for $10.00. Are these deals really that good?
I went straight to the source – the grocery store – to find out.
I spent time interviewing the grocery store personnel, and cashiers, and I also asked a few customers to get their take on these advertised savings. And here is what I learned.
In most cases, the deals are great. When you look at the regular retail prices for these products compared to what the sales price is, it’s quite the steal. Again, on most items.
One perfect example is this week in our grocery store, ground turkey is 10 for $10.00. This is 10lbs of ground turkey. That really is a great deal.
One manager I spoke to said they don’t do it very often and he encourages consumers to stock up while they can. Occasionally you will find awesome meat deals like this, but it isn’t often.
His only advice, “Be sure you have the room to store this much turkey, because more than likely you will have to freeze some of it.”
That would be one instance where the deal isn’t so great. When you get that much home and you don’t have a place to store it, the meat will go bad and you will have lost money. So be sure before you stock up on anything that you have the room to store it and that you have the appetite to consume it.
One customer was raving over the fact that the Pillsbury rolls and biscuits were marked down to 10 for $10.00. She was stocking up big time with over 30 packages in her cart. I asked her what she planned to do with all of it. Her response, “Freeze a bunch of it.” Good news – she’s saving money!
Another customer was filling her cart with Puffs facial tissue boxes and at 10 for $10.00 that is a really good deal. Considering that normal price ranges anywhere from $1.65-$2.35. That’s a savings of over $6.50. She said she stores in on shelves in her basement, but she has an immediate need for several boxes on her children’s school supply list.
A few other “deals” I saw listed were for packages of chalk, notebooks and single permanent markers. All were part of the 10 for $10.00 sale but this is where sometimes I don’t feel these are the best bargains. Be sure you shop around. Many of these exact same items are available at other stores for much less. Currently composition notebooks (also part of this 10 for $10.00 sale) are .50 each at Target. What a waste to purchase them at the grocery store.
Overall, the sale is awesome, the deals are great and you can stock up on items you might use frequently. But keep in mind that not every deal is a deal. Do your homework and shop around. Know what other stores charge for these items.
