Are Homeschooled Children Over Sheltered? Part II

This post is the continuation of my answer to the question, Are Homeschooled Children over Sheltered? Part 1 details the ways in which I believe homeschoolers are sheltered… and proud of it too.

On the other hand…

No! Homeschooled children are not over sheltered… taking account the same caveat I mentioned previously. (That it will depend on the parent)

Homeschooled kids are not sheltered form life. Homeschooled children watch television and the news. Homeschooled children witness death, birth, and destruction. Homeschooled children study and discuss history, sometimes repeatedly. Unless they are locked away, there is not way a homeschooled child can be sheltered from the rigors of every day life.

I make it a point to expose my children to life and life’s lessons so that when I hand them their suitcase and debit card, they know how to handle themselves and function in the real world. Community service allows them to see that not everyone lives at the some levels. They know that some people are fortunate, some people are not, and the chance of having fortune depends on mindset and hard work, and good health. We watch TV and movies together, and I take every opportunity to point out how toxic people will take advantage of you and prey on you if given the chance. We go to church and they hear testimonies about how lives have changed. On how sometimes a person can be living an unhealthy life, but with the right guidance and faith can turn it around. Also, just by the fact that they are alive and we live near a major city, my children know people of all ages with various experiences and orientations… yes, orientations. They know that they do not have to approve of some ones life choices to love them.

In summation, you can see that homeschoolers are neither over, nor under sheltered when you put it all together. In fact, homeschoolers are sheltered just right!
