Are Paper Plates Luxury Items?

Do you consider paper plates, paper towels, and other paper products to be luxuries? While many frugal consumers avoid such purchases, I for one believe they can be a good value. When purchased on sale, paper plates cost less than a penny per plate. Doesn’t it cost more than that to wash one plate when you consider gas or electricity for the water heater, the water itself, and the dish washing liquid used? This is one area in which my opinion probably differs greatly with other frugal folk.

I enjoy the convenience of paper plates, especially when all four kids are home during the summer. We go through a lot of dishes! I figure it has to be cheaper to use paper plates where possible than it is do wash plates by hand or run the dishwasher twice each day.

What about paper towels? For one thing, they help prevent the spread of germs. A towel that everyone in the home uses throughout the day is a breeding ground for germs and bacteria. I’d rather throw those little buggers in the trash. I have actually seen people wipe dishes with a kitchen towel that other people have used to dry their hands. Yuck!

I also feel that it is more economical to use paper towels and even baby wipes than it is to stain up towels, launder them, or replace them, at least in some circumstances. I don’t use paper products for everything, but I do generally have some on hand. You can always tear paper towels in half for small clean ups or to use as a napkin if you run out.

If one man’s trash can be another man’s treasure, then why can’t one woman’s luxury also be another woman’s good deal? In my opinion, it can. What do you think?
