Are You in a Scripture Study Rut?

Daily scripture study is a wonderful opportunity to spend time reflecting on the gospel. It is a time when you can learn more about Christ. It is also a time to meditate and bring the spirit into your life. If you find that your scripture study is not as effective as it used to be, you may be stuck in a study rut. You should try to do things a little differently to make the most of your time.

The first thing you should do is to pray before and after you read the scriptures. This simple step is easy to forget as your rush about your day. It is important to pray that you may receive guidance and understanding as you read the scriptures. You may also want to pray about finding answers to specific problems or questions.

You may consider reading in a different way. You may want to study by topic for awhile or if you have been studying by topic you may need to simply read the scriptures. You may want to slow down and look at the footnotes of the verses that stand out to you or you may need to read the chapters all together so you can understand the whole picture.

If reading is difficult or if you are having a hard time finding the time to read consider getting the scriptures on CD or on an mp3 player. You can listen while you drive in your car. This is a great resource especially if you are an audio learner. You can get the MP# downloads free at the LDS website.

Another great way to make scripture study more meaningful is to keep a journal as you study. You can jot down insights, ask questions and record answers. You may also want to read conference talks that are related to the subject that you are studying. This will help you to understand how the scriptures affect you today.
