Articles of Faith Series – the Ninth Article

The ninth Article of Faith states: We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.

As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we believe that the heavens are not silent. We believe that God continues to speak to His children just as He did in days long past, and that He will continue to send forth revelation as we need it.

Ours is a living church. We have a prophet on the earth today who is in regular communication with the Lord and tells us those things we need to know in order to safely complete our journey back to Him. We are told in the scriptures that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and so it makes sense that He would continue to have prophets today, just as He did in times past. And in a time with the world in a state of chaos such as it is, don’t we need heavenly guidance now, more than ever?

Each dispensation of time has faced challenges and difficulties unique to it. Noah’s command to build a boat and gather up the animals was custom-designed for him in his situation, and yet would have been of no use to Moses. Likewise, the command to take our only sons and sacrifice them would be inappropriate for us today, while it was exactly what Abraham needed to hear. As we move forward through time, the basic commandments will always be the same, but there will be continued revelation to tell us the things that we need to hear in our own day, at our own time.

Food storage is one such commandment that we have been given for our benefit in these latter days. The principle has been around since ancient times—when Joseph of Egypt spoke to the pharaoh about the coming famine, the solution he suggested was to store food. That simple act saved a nation. The pattern was laid out for us in the Bible—when we have a time of plenty, which we do right now, we should take whatever we can and store it away against a time of famine. That counsel is just as important to us today as it was in Joseph’s time.

God continues to speak to us and He will not stop. There are so many things we need to know. We have been commanded to seek out the mysteries of God for ourselves, and those can only be discovered through personal revelation. God speaks to His prophets, He speaks to us as individuals, and He will never stop speaking as long as we continue to listen.
