Ask a Marriage Blogger – Can We Sing Our Vows?

Good morning, I have an odd question for you. I enjoy reading your blogs and I’ve been reading a great deal about wedding planning in your blog, but there is one question you hadn’t actually addressed. If you have the time, would you mind writing about whether or not a couple can sing their vows to each other rather than repeat the statements made by the minister? My fiancé and I have always had a passion for musicals.

I guess this is cheesy, but the idea of having a musical wedding is something that makes us both laugh. In our way, we want to create that sensation of the happily ever after at the end of most musicals and fairy tales have. So, are we crazy? Can we have a musical wedding?

– Happily Ever After To Be

Dear Happily Ever After To Be,

I think the idea of a musical wedding is absolutely charming. It’s important to note that you and your fiancé both need to be able to sing or you will feel awkward during the wedding. If your goal is to host a musical wedding, you might settle on a theme and consult with your family and your fiancé to decide on that theme.

For example, you may decide that your theme will be based on The Sound of Music. You may walk down the aisle to the music that Maria did when she married the Commodore. You may sing Edelweiss to each other or you may have a choral or chorus group sing in the background before, during and after the wedding.

At one wedding I attended in England a few years ago, the groom’s band played the music for the entirety of the ceremony and afterwards. During the ceremony, he joined them to serenade the bride with a song they prepared about why he wanted to marry her. She didn’t sing in response.

Another wedding I attended involved the mother of the bride singing her daughter down the aisle. She began with a lullaby that she sang to her daughter when she was born. During the part where the father of the bride gave her hand to the groom to be, he sang a song to her about being his little girl and letting her go.

So if you want to have a musical wedding, decide how musical you’d like the participants and the guests to be in joining you and your fiancé in your nuptials. I think you’ll enjoy yourselves tremendously. So to answer your question – yes, you and your fiancé can have a musical wedding if that’s what you want to have.

I’d love to hear about your wedding and I wish you and your fiancé the best of luck!
