Spring is definitely in the air and everyone I know is having babies! There is nothing sweeter than a newborn baby and I love to give handmade baby gifts. This year I know five people having babies within weeks of each other. That’s a lot of baby showers.
I usually make quilts but with so many little ones I needed something quick and inexpensive. Hanky hats! I’m sure you’ve seen these, they are the sweetest little thing. They whip up quickly on the sewing machine but are a great hand sewing project as well. The stitches are easier to remove if you hand sew it then it can be pressed flat in a baby book for the child’s wedding day.
All you need is a hanky, vintage ones are best. If you can get one from someone in the baby’s family, even better. I bought this one in the wedding section at Hobby Lobby.
First wash the hanky in just soap and cold water. Dry and iron. Then, and fold about three inches of the front either under, or cuff it back like I did if it has pretty embroidery on it. At the opposite end turn under about an inch, iron.
Using ribbon cut a longer piece for the back and two shorter pieces for the side ties. Sew the side ties where they will be hidden by the part you turned back in the front.
Sew the seam on the large cuff in front and the smaller cuff on the bottom. I laid my ribbon in the cuff on the bottom before sewing so I didn’t have to thread it through.
Once the sewing is done pull the ribbon in the back to close the back and tie it in a bow.
That’s all there is to it. Easiest baby gift every and just as precious as a newborn. There are also really cute poems to go with this hat online, print one off and add it to the gift.
