Back to School: Organizing Kids’ Rooms

It won’t be long now. School will be starting and that means new school supplies as well as new clothes, shoes, and accessories. It also means getting organized. Now is the perfect time to start sorting through existing items to see what still fits and what can be given away to make room for new stuff.

Get Kids Involved

Your kids can help out too. They can try things on, set aside items they know they won’t wear any longer, and check things off the list of supplies. As you work together, you can help your kids decide on a place for everything so they won’t be struggling to find things each morning when getting ready for school.

A Place for Everything

You might want to add another shelf or other type of storage unit for backpacks, school supplies, sporting gear, instruments, and other items so children won’t misplace them. When they return from school, each item goes into it’s place when not in use. Then, your kids can just grab their stuff and go in the morning instead of running around trying to gather their belongings. Shoes can also become a problem if not organized. It can be frustrating to drop everything as you’re trying to get out the door, because you have to stop and locate a stray shoe. There are various types of shoe storage units available, from the simple canvas or vinyl shoe bags that hang in closets, to handy shoe racks.

Separate Clothing

It helps to separate play clothes from school clothes. Perhaps you’d like to set aside a drawer or shelf (or two) that is just for play clothes. Then, you can organize good clothes into sections such as shirts, pants, shorts, skirts, etc. For younger children, it helps to organize clothing into outfits if they dress themselves. This way, they’ll know what goes together and they’ll be able to grab an outfit at a glance.
