Basic Sugar Cookies

sugar cookies Every household should have a good basic sugar cookie recipe. Not only does it give you cookies that can be cut out using cookie cutters and decorated, but a basic sugar cookie recipe can also serve as a base for other types of cookies.

Sugar cookie dough is so versatile. For example, you can add peppermint extract, divide the dough and color half of it with red food coloring, then make ropes and twist them to form candy canes. You could also add unsweetened cocoa for chocolate cookies, make pumpkin spice cookies, make raisin cookies, make lemon cookies or make marble cookies. It all depends on what flavorings, coloring and add ins you put into the sugar cookie dough.

Make a large batch of sugar cookie dough, do some variations, and you’ll have a variety of cookies without having to make up a dozen different batches and recipes. The dough usually freezes well, too, so you can store some in the freezer and make warm, home made cookies any time.

There are many different variations of sugar cookies, although they are all mostly the same recipe, since sugar cookies are so basic and simple. Here are a few of my favorite ones to try.

Martha Stewart Basic Sugar Cookies

Who knows cookies better than Martha Stewart. She displays here sin a sophisticated way with silver sprinkles and colored sugar, but the recipe itself is solid enough to make with kids.
