Battling Pet Hair

My cousin’s home has hardwood floors, but part of the sealer coat is uneven in an area near the front hall. The semi-sharp edge is where you can typically find a wad of dog hair just about every day. Once he finds the time to reapply sealer in the affected area, I’m sure the dog’s hair won’t get caught there, but until then guests are forced to walk around or (GASP!) on a furball as they make their way to the living room.

Being the Dyson lover that I am, I recommended that my cousin purchase a Dyson Pet Vacuum Cleaner. The company offers three types: DC07, DC14 and DC15. While they are the most expensive models Dyson has on the market, every single person I know who owns one swears that they could not live without the specialty vacuum.

Most of Dyson’s pet vacuum cleaners come equipped with a Mini Turbine Head tool to get pet hair and dirt off of upholstery, but it’s the suction, not the handheld accessories that will impress you. Dyson’s vacuums feature a powerful cyclonic Root8Cyclone, which is so effective not even cigarette smoke can escape. Plus, since the vacuum is bagless there is no need to replace bags or filters. What’s more, emptying the clear bin is a breeze. You simply detach it from the machine, hold it over a trash can and pull the release trigger.

If you can’t afford a Dyson to suck up unwanted pet hair, then consider the following tips that will also go a long way to minimizing the appearance of stray pet hair on your floors:

Air filters: Don’t skimp on these. Use good quality air filters throughout your home and on your vacuum (if it is not a Dyson) to catch errant pet hair. High quality filters also help minimize dust particles and pet dander.

Reduce spread: Maintain a cleaning schedule that keeps your carpets, rugs, and furniture free of pet hair. Dog and cat fur can easily be transferred from the floor to furniture, clothing, and shoes, or bedding.

Color coordinate: If possible, consider choosing a floor covering that is similar in shade and tone to your pet’s hair. This will help the fur blend in so it is not as noticeable if you can’t clean it up right away.
