Be a Better Single Parent in Four Easy Ways

We all have trials and tribulations as a parent, but being a single parent is a class all it’s own. But you can resolve to be a better single parent and improve your relationship with your children, and others in your life.

Worry Less
Worrying about everything around you creates stress and isn’t productive. Spend less time worrying and more time being productive in other ways. And if you really must worry, than try to only worry about the things that you can actually control – and rather than worry, spend time finding a solution.

No Guilt
Is your child’s mom/dad not involved? Feel like a one parent household is not enough for your child? Not enough time in the day to spend lots of quality time? Stop feeling guilty about everything!! These are things you sometimes cannot control, and even if you could, feeling guilty about them isn’t going to solve the problem or make it go away. Single parenting is a unique skill and just like any parent, there are going to be bad days and good days. Stop feeling guilty for the bad days and focus on the great times you have on the good days!

Get Out of the House
Go on a date, or just out with a friend. Give yourself a night of adult time at least once a month, but I recommend more often. When we are alone all day with children, the adult company can be just the stress reliever we need!

Get Help
Don’t forget to ask for help when you need it. If you are financially unstable, seek government help. Food stamps, WIC and United Way are set up to help you. If you are needing someone to talk to, there are many low-cost or free programs available that offer counseling or group support.

Single parenting is not for the meek or mild. It is a difficult thing to do and you have a lot to be proud of. Resolve to spend more time on yourself as a single parent and you will flourish.
