Be a Blessing

‘Having someone who understands is a great blessing for ourselves. Being someone who understands is a great blessing to others,’ says Janette Oke, author of numerous Christian romance novels. These words were on my calendar for today and I thought how apt they are for marriage.

In marriage don’t all of us want that someone who understands us better than anyone else? It should work the other way as well we need to be the one who understands them too. We understand when they need time to process things that are happening and may not feel like talking just at that moment. We still need to show them that we love them though and are there ready for when they want to talk.

We need to be a blessing. Sometimes you can be a blessing just in little things. This week we arranged with our local council to come out and pick up some rubbish, as we don’t own a trailer to get it to the tip. The scheduled collection date was Friday. Rather than leave it out overnight we elected to put it out on the collection day. I suggested we should put it out first thing just in case they came early. At 6am we were out putting the goods out for collection. Then we made an early morning trip to the supermarket before it got busy. By the time we came home the goods had been collected.

‘I’m glad I listened to you,’ Mick said. Initially Mick had been inclined to put it out a bit later after we’d been to the supermarket. ‘You’re a wise woman,’ he continued.

Only a few words but what a blessing! It showed he listens to what I think and takes note of it and is ready to say how he appreciated the input. So we not only got rid of our rubbish but it made me feel good, not to know I was right but to know what he valued what I said.
