Bedroom TV

Do you have a TV in your bedroom? Everything I’ve read suggests that the bedroom is one of the worst places to have a TV. Watching TV in bed can be disruptive to intimacy. The TV can affect the way you sleep. The bedroom is supposed to be a quiet and calming place. Television is disruptive the serenity we are looking for in the place where we unwind, rest, and rejuvenate.

My parents have always had a TV in their bedroom. That’s what I grew up with. The children were not to have TVs in their rooms, but Mom and Dad’s room was pretty much where the family watched TV. The house was built in 1915 and the main family space isn’t really conducive to comfortable TV viewing.

I put a TV in my room and added a cable box with movies when I was older. I needed it because I worked swing shift on the customer service line. I have not been without a TV in my room since. I love to watch TV in bed. I would sleep with it on if it didn’t bother Chris so. When I sleep on the couch either because of children or early waking I am able to fall back to sleep because of the TV distraction.

The TV in our room is a very nice 32” JVC. It’s an older model box set that we bought not long after moving to Texas. The color is wonderful and the picture crisp. It’s not HDTV but the quality is almost as good as the HDTV in the living room. The size of the set is worrisome. It weighs about 142 pounds. Although it’s pretty secure on the dresser we still worry. We want to replace it with a flat screen TV on the wall.
