Being of One Purpose

One important part of marriage is being of one purpose. It is important that you and your spouse have the same destination in mind, when it comes to your relationship. Since we believe in eternal marriage, this is especially important. Your marriage should be focused on returning to live with Heavenly Father and helping your children to do the same.

Sometimes it helps to sit down and actually write down the purpose or goals that you want to achieve in your relationship in your marriage, as well as your family relationships. It can be a mission statement for you or if you balk at the idea of a mission statement you may decide to make it more of a destination point. Once you have established these common goals it will be easier to work as a team.

It is important to realize that while you and your spouse may have one purpose to work towards, that you are not the same person. It is healthy to have different interests and opinions, as long as you do not let them pull you apart. Where one of you struggles the other may be strong—this helps to strengthen your relationship.

It is also important to spend time together making sure that you are striving for the same goals. Couple prayer and couple scripture study provides you an opportunity to spend time together discussing the goals as they are centered in the gospel. Attending the temple together will give you the opportunity to remember the covenants that you made with each other. This simple reminder can help you in your daily relationship and keep it strong.

As you work together to raise your children in the gospel your relationship will grow stronger. As you spend time building each other up spiritually you will feel closer to each other and to the Lord. The peace that comes with doing these things will give you strength to meet future trials, and return to live with the Lord.
