Benefits of Church for a Single Parent

Becoming single, whether from divorce or the death of a spouse, is a huge change of life, especially when there are children involved. During this time of life, it is essential to surround yourself by loving and understanding family and friends. In addition, once you are on your own, you need to keep yourself focused in the right direction so you remain positive and strong. One of the best suggestions is to find a good church where you live, one that offers single moms a support system.

For instance, many churches provide a special ministry that is geared toward singles and single parents. This way, you would not feel left out or isolated when going to church but have a new group of friends in your situation who understand. As time goes by, you will find that you feel more confident and powerful, which makes life easier for you and for the children you love.

In addition, churches will often ask for your assistance. After all, there is no better way to get through a difficult time in life than to give instead of receive. In this case, they may have a program whereby they need a Sunday school teacher, a youth assistant, or even a mentor to other children who do not have parents. You will get more out of this type of program than anything else, allowing you to heal through helping.

You will also find that churches help the newly single parent in situations outside the church. I remember when I first became divorce. I had purchased a home and with winter just around the corner, all of the windows needed to be reglazed but I had no idea how. My friend’s church called me and said they had a special home maintenance program for single mothers. Within one week, I had 13 of the nicest men at my home on ladders, fixing each of the 15 windows in my home. I felt so amazingly blessed.

For the children, churches are also a huge benefit. In addition to special classes, you will find that most churches offer fun activities for kids of all ages. In fact, some churches also have scholarship programs to help put your kids through private school or college. Obviously, this type of program is a huge help. Although some people view assistance as charity, you have to understand that life has changed and at least initially, you need help. Therefore, if you are offered free food, home repair, car repair, childcare, or some other type of aid, accept it with open arms. Remember, a day will come when you can return the favor to another single parent.
