“Beverly Hills, 90210” Returns to TV

Not in reruns, but a spinoff to be aired on the CW.

Rob Thomas (he’s the guy who created “Veronica Mars”) is reportedly writing the pilot for an updated version of “Beverly Hills, 90210” minus the goody-goody Walsh family.

Instead of having characters Brenda and Brandon at the center of all the teen angst Thomas reveals a new twist:

“The guy who gets hired as the new principal brings his family of four from Kansas to Beverly Hills. The principal, himself, graduated from West Beverly High School,” Thomas told reporters. “The grandmother — the principal’s mother — is a Julie Christie-like actress who is once again going into rehab.”

Thomas also revealed that the principal “reluctantly” accepted the job at his alma mater and is bringing his wife, son and daughter with him.

And what of the original characters’ old stomping grounds such as The Peach Pit? Will the ‘50s-style diner popularized in the original version of the show remain a central venue in the spinoff? According to Thomas, he hopes to bring The Peach Pit back to life in future episodes but don’t expect to see the new kids gathering in Nat’s old place in the pilot.

Another plot twist: The new teen characters won’t be living off of mommy and daddy’s credit cards. Thomas says he plans to have one or both of the main characters work at a local movie theater.

As for Thomas’ plan to bring back some of the original cast members he did reveal that he is interested in hiring at least one of the actors from the original show but wouldn’t say which one because he hadn’t talked to any of them.

My money’s on Tori Spelling whose famous father, Aaron, created the original show.

I’m no Merlin, but I did hear the actress recently tell a TV reporter that she would jump at the chance to appear on the new “Beverly Hills, 90210.”

Surprise, surprise.

Unless Thomas plans to have Donna Martin preggers in the pilot I would guess that Spelling might not be the ideal choice.

The actress is due to give birth in early June and recently revealed that she is having a girl.

The 34-year-old mother to 1-year-old son Liam says she and her husband Dean McDermott are thrilled to be adding a little girl to their growing brood.

“We were shocked when the doctor said the ultrasound showed a girl!” Spelling told reporters. “Since Dean has [a son] Jack and now Liam, I always kid him that he’s shooting only boys.”

It’s no secret that Spelling has a difficult relationship with her own mother Candy and at first she says she was concerned about having a girl because of it. Now she says she is embracing the fact that she is about to have a daughter.

“Because my mother and I have always had a complicated relationship, I always wanted a girl to prove that the past doesn’t have to repeat itself,” Spelling says. “I can’t wait to be a great mom and friend to her.”

Who knows, maybe Spelling’s new baby can play Donna Martin’s offspring on the new show?
