Bible Stories to Share With Your Children: The Creation

As I mentioned in a previous blog, I am going to start writing a weekly series on Bible stories to share with your children. I believe that the Biblical account of creation is a great place to start for a couple of different reasons, most obviously because it shows children the beginning of our existence, but also because it shows that we are unique creation from God. The Biblical account of creation is found in the first two chapters of Genesis. My goal in this blog is not to retell the creation story but to rather give ideas on how to share the story with your family.

Key Lessons in the Creation

1. God created the earth and everything within it in from nothing in six days. This concept is reinforced in Exodus 20:11: “For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them.”

2. According to the Bible, God created man. The Bible does not say that God created a single-celled organism that eventually evolved into man. It is also interesting to note that all organisms (whether plant or animal) would reproduce according to their kind.

3. Genesis 1:26 states: “Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness.”” This verse brings out a couple of good lessons. First this scripture states that we are made in God’s image, a creation different from the rest of God’s creation. This passage also confirms that God is a three-part being as indicated in other parts of the Bible such as in Matthew 3:16-17.

4. God saw that the creation was good. Genesis 1:31 states: “Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good.”

5. According to Genesis 2:1 the creation was finished and not left as an ongoing process.

6. God created the first family which consisted of a man and a woman.

7. According to the Bible God spoke the creation into existence, a concept that is reiterated throughout the creation account with the phrase “God said” as well as in John 1:1-3.

There are many other lessons that can be learned from the creation story, but these are a few key concepts. Obviously some of these lessons may be somewhat difficult for younger children but they can be modified to a more appropriate level or taught to them as they grow in the Lord.
