Body Odor

Did you know that our bodies produce two types of sweat? Eccrine is a clear, odorless sweat that helps regulate body temperature. Apocrine is produced by glands in the armpits and groin that can get stinky when it interacts with bacteria on the skin.

So what can you do to fight offensive body odor?

  • Wash daily. Use a deodorant or antibacterial soap.
  • Use deodorant daily. Pick a deodorant that contains metallic salts (like aluminum or zinc). Roll-ons and sticks usually give better coverage and protection than sprays.
  • Use an antiperspirant. This can slow down apocrine sweat production. Look for an antiperspirant that contains aluminum chloride. These are often available in combination with deodorants.
  • Sprinkle absorbent powder on the offensive area to soak up apocrine sweat and mask odors.
  • Wash clothes with an odor fighting detergent to get the smell out of your clothes.

Need more help with body odor?

  • Try benzoyl peroxide on offensive areas. The same ingredient that helps clear up acne can help clean away odor-causing bacteria. Be aware that excessive use can cause irritation and drying.
  • Dab on some antibacterial ointment to help kill odor-causing bacteria.
  • Do a mid-day touch up. A quick wash of your armpits can help clean away odorous material. Use a wet washcloth, paper towel, or a baby wipe. A splash of rubbing alcohol or witch hazel can help cut back on odor-causing bacteria.
  • Avoid spicy and pungent foods. Some overpowering odors can end up emanating from your pores.
  • Trim your body hair — especially in the armpits and groin. Hairs trap sweat and odor and provide plenty of real estate for bacteria.

Your body odor may be an indicator of a more serious problem if:

  • The smell persists despite regular, careful hygiene
  • The odor is sweet or fruity, not like your usual sweat — diabetes and certain urinary infections can cause a sweet or fruity body odor
  • The odor is strong enough for you to notice
  • A prepubescent child has strong body odor
