Book Review: Storytime Yoga

Preschool teachers and parents have long known that stories are an excellent resource for teaching new concepts to children. This is true in many areas, including yoga. The book Storytime Yoga: Teaching Yoga to Children through Story is a cute book for introducing yoga to kids.

Yoga has an abundance of physical and emotional benefits. Most people who practice yoga begin the practice at an early age. However, starting early is great for building self reliance, confidence, body awareness, not to mention benefit of the calming effect of yoga for stabilizing moods and helping kids relax.

This book is a complete resource for anyone interested in teaching yoga to children. It is a complete curriculum that can be used by teachers or parents. The program is designed to use with children from preschool through sixth grade.

The curriculum is detailed and includes enough for teaching a lesson in school, as well as learning at home with mom or dad. The curriculum includes folk tales from various cultures, themes, and yoga poses that correspond to the characters in the stories.

The first parts of the book are devoted to stories about the healing powers of yoga, establishing storytelling in the family and teaching yoga through story. This information is great for advice about storytelling in general and yoga stories in particular.

The next sections focus on teaching a storytime yoga class and teaching yoga to kids. This is followed by a curriculum, warm ups and stories from cultures around the world with asanas. These stories focus on specific poses, such as The Warrior’s Journey, The Buffalo Dance and The Magic Pear Tree.

The last sections of the book have additional games, meditation, creative relaxation and resources for yoga and storytelling. If you are looking for one comprehensive book that you can use to teach yoga to your kids, this is the one to get.
