Bracing for the Winter Storm

storm While we didn’t exactly have a white Christmas this year, the weather is certainly making up for it today. We are battening down the hatches and waiting for what could be more than a foot of snow.

Late morning, we decided to venture out to two different (by close) stores in search of winter coats that might be on sale after Christmas. We knew that the stores would probably be pretty empty. There was a light snow fall, but unlike the little bit of flurries yesterday, this one was starting to stick a bit.

We didn’t find what we needed at the store and started to head home. We took a quick detour for milk (we have three milk monsters at home) and found that unlike the mall stores, the convenience store parking lot was packed!

Being clueless, we had no idea that a major storm was coming until we saw that parking lot, the sure sign that we would be getting more than two inches of snow.

Luckily I was able to grab the very last gallon of whole milk.

Once home, we went into our storm preparation mode. The minivan was moved to the top of our driveway (otherwise it would be hard to get out in an emergency). The generator was checked and it was confirmed that we had gas to run it. Firewood was brought in from outside, and I did a quick check of our water/juice/boxed milk supply. The car already had plenty of gas.

I also decided to throw in two loads of laundry in case I couldn’t use the washing machine tomorrow. With a family of five, one or two skipped laundry days can get things out of hand, and we love our clean clothes, oh yes we do.

If we did lose power, there were plenty of items that we could eat without cooking them, and others that could be zapped quickly in the microwave if we use the generator.

My husband and I like being prepared, so even though we didn’t realize that there was a storm coming, the preparation for the storm was minimal.

How do you handle preparing for winter storms at your house?
