I first heard the news on a national cable network. Then, yesterday, the ladies on ABC’s “The View” weighed in on it during “hot topics. And, just this morning I heard Regis and Kelly chatting about it on their syndicated morning talk show. What is the world coming to? When people in the universe stop to take note of the fact that hotel heiress Paris Hilton has befriended newly separated pop princess, Britney Spears… it warrants a blog.
The two blond beauties (Britney just added some new long blond hair extensions to her bob to look more like her new best friend) have been inseparable since they hit the Las Vegas strip two weeks ago. Their female bonding reached a crescendo during the week of Thanksgiving when the two were photographed hitting the clubs together in Los Angeles almost every night over. But those after-dark dates apparently weren’t enough to satisfy the pair. PEOPLE magazine reported that Britney and Paris even went shopping in Malibu together with Spears’s son Sean Preston in tow last Saturday afternoon.
The girl-time marathon kicked off last week Tuesday, when Spears went to a post-American Music Awards party Hilton hosted at her West Hollywood home. Less than 24 hours later, the pair was spotted at Teddy’s at the Roosevelt Hotel in matching leopard-print outfits. On Friday, the magazine reports, Hilton left her sister Nicky and friends at the nightclub Les Deux to pick up Spears. The pair stopped at Hyde Lounge before eventually heading back to Les Deux just before close.
A source told PEOPLE that “Paris was acting like Britney’s boyfriend. She opened doors for her, held her hand, and even had her arm around Britney’s lower back. Britney happily accepted Paris’ friendly gestures.”
This new coupling follows on the heels of Spears’ separation (and subsequent divorce filing) from her husband of two years, Kevin Federline. Look, I’m no expert on California law and child custody issues, but I do know that Spears is petitioning the court for sole legal custody of her two very young boys… I know I am not alone in wondering how all of this public “partying” will affect her case.
I also wonder if we are not on the verge of some tabloid slapping a nickname on the new couple. Let’s see… how about “Britpar” or “Paribrit?”
