Budget Recipes- End of Summer Cheeseburgers

cheeseburger School has started, and the Summer is over. It might be nice to do one last dinner that brings you the tastes of Summer before the weather really starts to get cold. If you pay attention to what is on sale at the grocery store, you can make a meal that fits within your budget. Make your family some “End of Summer Cheeseburgers”.

Right now in California, we are experiencing a bit of a heat wave. Perhaps the weather where you live isn’t quite that warm. Either way, it can make you miss the good things about Summer. Few things remind people of Summer vacation more than the types of foods that they ate while attending outdoor BBQ parties. This could be the perfect time to serve your family some “End of Summer Cheeseburgers” before the Winter is upon us.

Vons has sales on many of the ingredients that you will need in order to make this meal for your family. Twelve ounce packages of Farmland sliced bacon are $2.99. Vons fresh 93% lean ground beef is $3.99 a pound. Packages of Butcher’s Cut 73% lean ground beef patties are $5.00. Vons deli Signature Cafe cole slaw is $2.49 a pound. Haas avocados are 3 for $5.00. Red tomatoes on the Vine are $1.99 a pound.

I found a recipe for a “Classic Cheeseburger” on the Martha Stewart Recipes website. It is a nice simple recipe to follow. I would alter it slightly, in order to give more of a California flavor to the “End of Summer Cheeseburgers”.

You Will Need:

Two pounds of ground beef

Two teaspoons of salt

One fourth a teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper

Three ounces of cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese (in slices)

One package of bacon

Four hamburger buns

Two tomatoes (sliced)

Eight leaves of lettuce

One small red onion (sliced)

Some avocados (to taste)

Cole Slaw

What You Will Need to Do:

Step One: Wash the lettuce, onion, and tomatoes. Slice the onion and tomatoes. Set aside leaves of the lettuce. Cut open the avocado, so your family can easily add the amount they want onto their cheeseburger.

Step Two: Fry the bacon.

Step Three: You have a choice. Either fire up the backyard grill for the last time before it snows, or, get out a skillet and cook the burgers on the stove in your kitchen. Season the burgers with salt and pepper before cooking them (as rare or as well done as your family wants).

Step Four: Melt a slice of cheese over each finished burger. Place the burger onto a bun. Your family can add the amount of lettuce, tomato, onion, avocado, and bacon that they would like to their burgers. Serve the “End of Summer Cheeseburgers” with a side of fresh cole slaw.
