In a previous blog I took a stroll down memory lane to revisit a saying one of my obnoxious junior high classmates used to torture the girls with: “Here’s a dollar go out and buy some fashion sense.” Ah, the good ol’ days.
As I mentioned earlier, I am by no means a fashion expert, but I do learn from my mistakes and make note of the fashion tips that have served me well in the years since junior high.
Here are a few more:
Learning How To Dress For Your Body Type
You may not keep on top of all the trends that come out of Milan or Paris, but you don’t have to if you know your body type and the styles that work with your features. Whether you’re short, tall, thin or curvy, knowing what works for you can help you accentuate the positive and minimize the negative.
For example, if you are vertically challenged (like me) you want to stay away from bigger prints, which can overwhelm your figure. Instead stick with smaller prints and patterns. Also, it’s a good idea to wear V-neck shirts since the open neckline makes your neck appear longer, and help you appear taller. Another tip: avoid horizontal stripes. Vertical lines are much better as they give the illusion of being taller or thinner. If you are tall, wide-leg slouchy trousers or jeans, look best. Also, they are a great way to accentuate your waist and appear slimmer. If you are a curvy woman consider picking a bold pattern to help camouflage weight.
Fabrics Matter
You don’t have to be a fashion expert to know wearing too-tight clothing that reveals every imperfection is a big fashion no-no. When you are looking to dress to impress stay away from clingy jersey-knit dresses and tops that show every bulge. Instead, choose fabrics that are heavier in weight or items that are lined. However, if you simply can’t live without a semi-sheer dress or one without a liner, consider getting a fashionable slip.
One final tip: when it comes to style having good posture will make any outfit look fashionable (okay, practically every outfit). Feeling confident about what you’re wearing is the most important fashion tip to follow.
