Career Interrupted

We talked about your spouse and your career last week. I wanted to revisit the subject at least briefly today and talk about the different types of behavior that might be considered inappropriate and when you need to talk to your spouse about it.

The Party Girl/Guy

The overindulgent partier is one who does the crazy things at all the company events. Whether they are the life of the party or not, they are definitely the one most likely to be talked about at the party and afterwards. If they are still partying like they were in a frat or sorority house, then you may want to talk to them about the fact that those antics are reflecting badly on you at work.

Frequent Caller

Does your spouse overindulge with the speed dial? Do you literally find yourself on the phone with them every five minutes, then it’s time to sit down and talk. If you don’t think they are being intentionally harmful, then simply tell them that your company has a policy that limits personal phone calls. Chances are, your company does limit the number of personal phone calls. The constant phone calls are not just a nuisance, but they could cost you your job. Ask to set up a schedule maybe you can call them over lunch and on a break if they are just looking for touching base throughout the day.

Crying Wolf

Does your spouse constantly call with a major problem or issue that forces you to leave work early or cut short an important call? When your spouse is crying wolf to get your attention, check to make sure you aren’t ignoring them when you are there and work to correct it if you are. Also talk to them about the fact that the constant summoning not only mean you end up working longer, but could also cost you the work in the first place.

More often than not, a partner starts to call wolf when they want attention or are feeling neglected. But no matter why they are doing it, you need to talk to each other about it. You need to discover it for yourself and find a way to work together to correct it. That’s what marriage is all about.

Don’t let your spouse cost you your job, chances are it’s the last thing they want too. Has your spouse ever done any of these things?
