Caroling! (A family that sings together stays together)

There is no time of year more suited for group singing that Christmastime, what with dozens of fun, seasonal and family friendly classics pouring out of our radios, it is quite impossible not to break out into song!

Your family may already have everything you need to compile and learn a short 3-5 song set list.

Consider the following tunes:

Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer
Deck the Halls
Santa Claus is Coming to Town
Jingle Bells
Frosty the Snowman
Silent Night
Oh Come All Ye Faithful

It may be best to adopt a medley format, starting with your strongest tune then proceeding to fold in the other songs. Be sure to end with either a bombastic number to close strong or a quiet carol (ala Silent Night) to end your performance with subtlety and grace.

Once you get your set down pat, spice up the routine by adding some Temptations-style hip and feet shuffling, spins, hand clapping, whistling, bells, or tambourine. You kids will love the extra ingredients, but use some care when it comes to how many add-ons you employ – you want the voices to remain prominent and at center stage. Plus, you do not want the kids to be thinking so much about the extracurricular that they cannot remember the lyrics!

When you have practiced enough and feel comfortable with your timing as a collective, take your show on the road!

To prepare for your tour:

1) Make a batch of cookies.
2) Package the goodies in cute little holiday tins. Toss in some colorfully wrapped Hershey’s Kisses as well.
3) Get yourselves a little dressed up (bonus points for matching attire!).
4) Take a walk to your most familiar and friendly neighbors.
5) Knock on their doors or ring the bells and start singing.

This is a surefire way to bring some joy, and hilarity, to the usual Christmastime proceedings. It is also a terrific way to share a unique moment as a family and a community, a moment that harkens back to another era.
