Choosing Color: Warm and Cool Colors

What color is the best for the rooms in your home? There is no ideal or best color to use. To decide which color to use, you need to ask what effects you want in each room. Do you want color that can stimulate you in doing your activities? Or do you need a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere? Here are some simple guidelines that may help you in choosing colors for your home.

Warm Colors

Red, yellow, orange, brown and burgundy are some examples of warm colors. You can use the colors from this group for the rooms where you do various activities. For example, warm colors are good for a play room, a study, a dining room or reception area. This color family has stimulating qualities that may create lively and vibrant moods, and encourage your body to be active

Cool Colors

Another group of colors can give the opposite effect. The examples of cool colors are green, blue, indigo and purple. These colors tend to create soothing effects, therefore they are ideal for the rooms where you want to relax in peaceful atmosphere, such as a bedroom or bathroom. Cool colors can also be used to make a room look more spacious. But they should not be used in shaded rooms which do not receive direct sunlight, as they will tend to create a gloomy effect.

Warm or Cool?

Remember that you are the one who knows best what activities you usually do in each room and what kind of atmosphere that you want. If you tend to use your living room as a place for having family fun and where your children always play, then warm colors might be good for your living room. But if you often use your living room as a place for sitting and relaxing, then you might need cool colors to create a peaceful atmosphere in your room.
