We are all faced with choices every day. What to wear, who to talk to, what to eat, but sometimes we forget that we can choose how to feel too. We can’t change the choices that people make. Everybody has their agency, but we can choose how to respond to them. Just because other people have made choices that have hurt you, doesn’t mean you have to feel miserable because of them. It is ok to feel hurt, it is ok to wish that things were different, but you can choose where your focus is. You can focus on the things that are wrong in your life, or you can choose to find the things that are right, no matter how small they may be.
Even when it feels like the whole world is crashing down around you, there are still good things. Count the blessings in your life. Tonight, mine was a little boy who came and gave me a hug and a kiss when Mommy was feeling sad. Did it take away the pain I was feeling? No, but it made it a little easier to deal with. It gave me the reassurance that everything was going to be alright because no matter what happens in our life we will always have each other. He will lean on me and I will lean on him. We will be each other’s strength just as we always have.
You can find happiness in your life. Some days you may have to look a little harder than others, but it is there. Don’t let yourself dwell on negativity. Life is hard. It is part of why we are here to learn and grow to be the best that we can be. You will have heartache in your life, there will be disappointments. Choose to find joy in the journey. It’s there, all you have to do is look.
