Christmas Eve 2010

6am: I woke up a little earlier than normal (actually I got out of bed earlier than normal) in order to take a quick shower and start a fire in our fireplace before anyone else was awake. I’m now comfortable sitting in my living room trying to organize my desk and the work I have to do in order to attempt to avoid it for a period of time. While today is just the “day before” Christmas it carries with it a special kind of feeling of excitement. I just heard the buzzer go off on my cup of tea — and tea doesn’t wait. Can’t wait to drink it.

7:30am: My wife arises from her slumber to a warm fire, a clean husband, a lit (and watered) tree, and a running dishwasher. She quickly covers herself in blankets and assumes a comfy position on our sofa next to to the fire. Time to finish up work on my dissertation for a bit. Christmas eve has just started!

9am: After a nice time sitting next to the fire together and curling up in a blanket with a nice cup of tea we threw another couple of logs on the fire discussed the order of the day: preparations. Since this is our first Christmas with just our own little family we’re having to make decisions about the order of the events. My wife is exercising at the moment and our son is surprisingly still asleep. Once he’s awake we’ll begin the preparations for tomorrow. Ah! There he is. Our little boy is awake. More later… let the day begin!

Noon: Made lunch (a simple but wonderfu PB&J), listed to music, and my wife made some creme brulee.

2pm: To the store for forgotten items. Not a good idea on the day before Christmas. The store was jam packed with people. We were almost run over by overstuffed shopping carts. We feared for our lives but wanted to make sure we had the ingredients we knew we’d need for tomorrow.

3pm: Used the egg whites from the creme brulee as an omlette. This was a nice way to reuse and not lose those whites. We also took a family photo. The results seem to be good but we’ll have to get it into the computer to know for sure.

5pm: Off to church. Busy, packed, crazy. A whole post of its own (forthcoming).

7:30pm: Restful cups of hot chocolate and peppermint bark. A fire. A brief chat with some far away family.

10pm: Our son is now going to bed. Hopefully Santa won’t miss our chimney. Better put out the fire! See you tomorrow!
