Celebrating the Holidays in Hawaii

Contrary to popular belief we really do celebrate the holidays in Hawaii. Of course, if you are one of those people who simply can’t celebrate without sub-zero wind chills, snow, ice, and frozen fingers then you might not want to travel to the Aloha State during December. However, if you prefer to take in holiday-themed activities minus the layers, gloves, hats, boots and hand warmers then Hawaii is waiting for you.

Most travelers don’t realize that the city of Honolulu consistently ranks among the Top 20 American cities for holiday light displays. The granddaddy of the state’s light festivals takes place tomorrow at Honolulu Hale (city hall).

The Honolulu City Lights Tree Lighting Ceremony officially gets underway Saturday at 6 p.m. Following the tree lighting ceremony a holiday parade featuring more than 2,000 marchers, 40 vehicles, 15 floats and 15 bands will travel down King Street (one of the main thoroughfares in downtown Honolulu). In addition to the tree lighting ceremony and parade, the city is also sponsoring a holiday music concert (it begins at 5 p.m.).

If you are planning to attend this year’s event you will be in for a special treat—the unveiling of a new 40-foot train carrying two menehune (similar to pixies or trolls) will wrap around the massive Christmas tree in front of Honolulu Hale. The train is a big deal (it didn’t exist when I was growing up) and features a pineapple smokestack that shoots smoke into the air. According to city leaders, one menehune drives the engine and the other is on a flat car, hanging on to a Christmas tree. The tree and the train will remain on display until the first week in January.

If you are lucky enough to be able to attend Saturday’s festivities know that the food booths and kiddie rides set up near the Christmas tree open at 4 p.m. Also, Santa will be on available for photos from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
