Cleaning Out the Stove

Next to the refrigerator, the stove is another appliance that most of us don’t like to clean. But just like the fridge it is one of those things that if it isn’t maintained, will become a huge cleaning project.

Let’s start with those of you who may have allowed your stove to get to the point where, well, you almost don’t like baking in it. It is definitely time to clean it out. Oven cleaners that you spray and leave on for a bit are the best types of products to use. But you may need to incorporate other products as well, such as an SOS pad. Those work really great for getting stubborn caked-on food.

There are also degreaser products available on the market such as “Simple Green.” This can be an additional way to get everything out.

For a really thorough job, you will want to also take off all of the knobs (if they come off) drip pans, racks and anything else that is removable. This allows you to get every corner of the stove.

Make sure you put on some rubber gloves before you decide to scrub and chip away at the mess in your stove. And be sure to have windows open and a fan blowing because of the fumes you will get from the oven cleaner.

For the most part, you will be able to clean up the mess in your stove. But for those more stubborn areas, you may need to reapply oven cleaner or a degreaser and let it sit for a time. Then go back and scrub again.

Your final cleaning should be with warm water and soap. This should take care of the bulk of your mess. You may have to do some extra scrubbing, such as with the oven racks but it will be worth it. Before you know it, you will be ready to put in a batch of cookies.

Now remember to schedule this in as a weekly chore and if possible, at least wipe it down after every use once it has completely cooled.
